King James Bible margins 1of2

bibleprotector asked:

King James Bible margins 1of2 The margins of the King James Bible are not the inspired Scripture, as shown by Scripture itself, by the 1611 translators’ own words and intention, and by the Church in history. The margins are there so that a reader can investigate the other imperfect senses, but a Christian today does not have to look at every last marginal note to make sure that the main English text is right throughout: we have much testimony from many to indicate that this whole matter has …

No. They were speaking directly of the former Protestant English Bible Versions. However, since the King James Bible was intended to supersede these, and that the King James Bible has not been considered “mean”, it is clear that the makers of the King James Bible intended that their work would be the Word of God for any and all who speak English. They call it “one more exact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English Tongue”.

Were the KJV translators “liars” for saying the “the very meanest (poorest) translation” is still “the word of God”?

It is really a false cause and effect to say that the margins of the KJB indicate that the translators did not achieve perfection in English. The margins do not have any affect upon the perfection of the English text, and they are not designed to be used to alter the English text as it stands.

It is well known that no Hebrew text, copy or scroll is known to exist today which is 100% perfect. The KJB is different because it is the settled final gathered form which resolves all variations.

    4. The distinction between main text and margins is one sign of their judging of what should stand as their collective judgment as the exact Word. Other choices include where they had to choose between two variants (they do not show all the variants they had to choose from). And so, it is obvious that they saw themselves as providing a definitively correct Text and Translation. This means that their work was, in their own opinion, the best possible. It has since been recognised as the best.

    3. The translators, by their completing of the task, by the setting up of what they call Scripture and the Word of God, and even calling it one more exact Translation of the holy Scripture into the English Tongue both implies and clearly shows that they believed that they got it right.

    1. The marginal material was added by the translators, not to clarify Scripture itself, but to give allowance for the reader to seek further.
    2. When the translators point to or allude to variations in the originals (i.e. the gathered editions of their day), they are highlighting facts, not doubting the Scripture itself. Since there was only one inspired Scripture, there is ultimately one correct form of words at every place, which means only one out of two variations can be correct.

If the KJV translators felt it was necessary to add footnotes for clarification or variants in the original manuscripts, doesn’t that mean that the translators did not recognize there own translation as perfect?

The KJB translators weighed the various words which had great probability and judged rightly which should stand as the main text. The reason why some reject this is because they do not believe that any Bible can be 100% exactly right in one book. They also try and read into the translators’ words the idea that no one can ever get it right. But the translators did not prohibit that people could find them right, especially after investigation.

You are saying more than the KJV translators said. They did not say exact. They used the word “probability.” They fully admitted to difficult words and phrases and warned against dogmatism. Dogmatism exibited by the KJVO.
