What does the Bible say about gossiping and the damages it causes?

Manda asked:

I know the Bible talks a lot about gossip, libel, and slander. But I don’t know how to put it into words. What does it really say about it?

What does it say about the power of the tongue?

Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

    ===========

Pro 6:16 These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him:

Pro 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

Pro 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

Pro 6:19 A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Gossip is the most talked about sin in the bible, there is more written about the power of the tongue and we can imagine. The power of life and death is on the tongue.

    Bible

Gossipers want to build themselves up by talking about others, or by spreading untrue or sensitive information in order to make someone else look bad.

“They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:29b-32).

This verse pertains to people that God gave over to their “evil ways”.

“A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man [or woman] who talks too much” (Proverbs 20:19).

“A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:12-13).

The first thing that God is trying to tell all of us is that we have a certain amount of “power” in our tongues. Our tongue is referring to the verbal words that we speak out of our mouths to other people.

When God is using the word “power,” He is telling us that every single one of us has a certain amount of power residing in our mouth and in our tongues with the words that we can release to other people.

In the tongue is the power of life and death.

With our words we can bless and curse.

My motto in LIFE is when I hear people gossipping about another, I HOLD my tongue shut. I will not say anything and remain neutral, that way no one can say I ever said anything against a person.

It’s a clean way to live, and it gives you a peace of mind, and no worry.

I know of a few people that never gossip and are held in very high esteem because of this good quality. Thanks.
